St. John’s Athletics

Basketball Program Information

REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR THE 2019/20 SEASON

Please read the descriptions next to each team as a guide to determining what to register for. SJA has a handbook with information about our philosophy about athletics and specific details concerning age, goals, communication, guidelines, etc.

Age and readiness are the principle factors that determine what team a student athlete will be placed on, not grade level. Final placements will be made by coaches and the A/D.

Miscellaneous items:

  • Gym rental at VIA, Warren County Middle School, and Ressie Jeffries Elementary School starts effective October 1.

  • Coaches will contact registrants with when their practice starts.

  • Complete registration is required by the end of October. To come to practices prior to registration, a waiver of liability is required. Download the Waiver and give it to the coach at the first practice attended.

VARSITY BOYS

  • Practice: M/W/F 8:00-9:45 at VIA

  • Cost: $175

  • Coaches:

    • Head Coach: Brian Fox

    • Assistant: Kevin Bailey

The varsity team is a competitive high school team. Players age 18 as of August 1 must register for varsity. Any player (<= 18) that played on varsity the prior year may register for varsity. Younger players aspiring to play for the varsity team but not meeting these conditions should wait to register until the coaches assess readiness for varsity level play and coordinate with the A/D following the open gym sessions to make team roster decisions.

High School Girls

  • Ages 15+

  • Practice begins Tuesday Oct 1

    • T/Th 7:30-9:15 at VIA

    • F 7:30-9:00 at RJES

  • Cost: $125

  • Coaches:

    • Head Coach: David Osbourn

    • Assistants: TBD

Relatively few programs in our area have distinct JV and Varsity girls basketball teams, making it virtually impossible to create a season schedule for a separate JV team. The majority of games are competitive varsity level.

JV skill-level girls should expect to focus on skill development & learning during the season, with approximately 4-5 games scheduled against JV-level opponents.

JV BOYS

  • Ages 14-17

  • Practice beings Wed Oct 2

    • M/W 7:30-9:00 at WCMS

    • Th 6:30-7:30 at VIA

  • Coaches:

    • Head Coach: Harry McMahon

    • Assistant: TBD

JV players may be 14-17.

Players <= 17 as fo Aug 1 are eligible for JV.

If age 14, the JV coach will assess readiness for JV level basketball participation. The goal is to place players where they will have the best opportunity to develop needed skills and contribute to the team. Put another way, the goal is to avoid premature promotion that results in sitting on the JV bench instead of getting playing experience at the level that better fits their skills.
